Edward Rockett - Lorin Grean - Michael Termondt - Paul Culver - Reed Harding
Sharon Singleton-Termondt -
Daniel Protheroe

Edward Rockett - Native American Flute, Bodhran, Kilimba, Tin Whistle

Contrary to popular belief, Edward was not born in the back seat of a potato harvester on March 19, 1948. But, it is true that he had his ears glued to KYA, San Francisco for the latest Elvis Presley songs. Music has been the focal point of Ed's entire life; from rolling around the floor to honky-tonk sounds his grandfather belted out on piano -- to the 78s his older cousin spun on his tiny record player -- to the late night jam sessions in pubs on the west coast of Ireland. And he can't get enough music of any kind, from pristine baroque to primitive African. After years of appreciation, Edward was drawn towards playing the music himself. Since buying his first penny whistle and learning to play by ear, he has acquired a talent for the low-D-whistle, flute, bodhran (Irish drum) and kalimba as well.

Lorin Grean - Vocals, Harp

Lorin was born in White Plains, New York on May 11, 1953. Her father's musical career spans over 4 decades; from bassist, to Glen Miller's copyist. to composer, arranger and producer of hundreds of songs including the 1950'a hits "The thing" and "Sweet Violets". Being brought up in a musical household familiarized Lorin with all types of music. She sang professionally throughout her childhood on commercials and children's albums. Later she played classical music with chamber groups on the sopranino, soprano, alto, tenor, bass and great bass recorders. When she became friends with the original 4 Salts, she began to integrate these instruments into the traditional Irish music they were then playing. As the Salts sound is taking on new dimensions, Lorin is certainly a part of their Renaissance.

Michael Termondt - Bouzouki, Mandolin, Guitar

Born in Wheaton, Illinois on January 16, 1956, Mike entered his first music competition playing "The Streets of Laredo' at the ripe age of ten. After 3 guitar lessons, he knew he had the basics down - - (and continued playing these same 3 chords for the next two years.)
Through high school and college, he continued with guitar, winning enough money in competition to pay for expenses after his allowance ran out. In a one man North American tour, he acquired a taste for Irish & traditional music, which taught him that real musicians should have a second income. Today he owns and plays a bouzouki, guitars, mandolin, a banjolir, 5 string & tenor banjos, balalaika, bass, piano, harp, flute, bodhran, bones, tin whistles and other odds and ends, each with a varying degree of proficiency, but each with good friends.

Paul Culver - Fiddle, Guitar

Paul, born on April 26. 1951, is a native San Diegan. He has been playing music since the age of 10, starting with the piano and guitar and more recently, the violin. His current fiddling style is a synthesis of 2 of his idols; Irish soloist Kevin Burke and jazz violinist Stephane Grapelli. Paul joined SALT while studying for his doctorate in biology in Santa Barbara and works by day as a Biomedical Researcher. His dedication to the SALT concept is evidenced by the fact that he commutes four hours each way to join the group for recording sessions and concerts, only to be subject to ridicule for bringing his dirty laundry with him. Paul is uniquely distinguished by having been kicked out of the band more than any other member.

Reed Harding - Guitar, Fiddle, Piano

Born on August 10, 1952 and a classically trained pianist since first grade, Reed went off the deep end in 1965 at age 13 playing guitar and bass in a high school dance/garage rock band. "Gloria", "Louie, Louie", and other heresies eventually led to things stranger - an interest in traditional folk music from various corners of our sphere. Reed supported himself growing houseplants between 1975 and 1981 - during
which time he became committed to either learning the fiddle or smashing it on the nearest rock. During this time he become 'iodized' (with SALT) and managed to keep his fiddle intact. An MBA from UCLA only served to provide Reed with more fiddling time. Rumor has it that he takes a break from all this by installing business software applications somewhere in the southern part of California.

Sharon Singleton-Termondt  - Vocals, Keyboard, Bones, Synthesizer

Originally a southern lass from Lake Charles, Louisiana, Sharon was born on August 24, 1953 - the second daughter in a line of 7 sisters. Singing songs and harmonizing with the girls was a natural past-time ever since her A-B-C days. Long before the 'Age of Synthesizers'
Sharon played tunes 'by ear' on a little play-by-number organ. By age 12, she had years of classical piano lessons under her belt and the basics for a life-long love affair with music. In 1978 a liaison was formed with a certain bouzouki player from Illinois and by 1982 she joined her Saltine "sister" in their formal debut with Salt on the Rug. Though a full-time Nuclear Medicine technologist, the "real" Sharon thinks life is a song -- back then this was especially true when sung as a lullaby to her baby daughter! Sarah, now 21.

Daniel Protheroe - Engineer, Bass

Daniel was born on May 27, 1952 and grew up in Santa Barbara, California. From 1967 to 1972, he played electric bass in various rock groups on the Epic, Uni and A&M labels, as well as being an active studio musician. From 1970 through 1985, Daniel was Chief Engineer for Two Dot recording studios and Santa Barbara Sound, where he also served as President and Studio Manager. Daniel has engineered and/or produced countless albums, soundtracks, spots, jingles and special purpose audio productions. The projects have spanned all styles of music and audio performance -- rock and jazz -- country and folk -- countless varieties of ethnic music -- experimental and avante garde. He gets special pleasure in combining various elements and styles from his extensive musical background into a single project such as the SALT production.
